Dr. Patricia Crippa

Hi! My name is Patricia Crippa, I have a BA in Physiotherapy (2001), PhD in Motor Behavior (2017), Masters in Human Movement Sciences (2006) from the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). I am a specialist in Neurofunctional Physiotherapy in Child and Adolescent Health by COFITO (Conselho Federal de Fisioterapia). In addition, I was a collaborating professor at the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (UDESC) from 2006 – 2017, and I have been working as a researcher since 2001.

I have experience with pediatric neurofunctional physiotherapy, combining fundamentals of biomechanics, GPR, RTA and Kabat and PNF. Through this knowledge, I developed a work methodology that has helped hundreds of children, adolescents and adults around the world in important issues of their development and functionality, in addition to the prevention and treatment of spinal pathologies (more precisely, kyphosis and scoliosis), and other joint deformities. The success of treatment in several cases has attracted more and more patients and professionals interested in the techniques developed.

I work mainly with neuromuscular diseases, with expertise in Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). I both research scientifically and provide care in the clinic with body weight support, neuropsychomotor development, aquatic biomechanics, human gait, myelomeningocele, cerebral palsy and force platforms.

Read on to find out more about my experience and services.

Neurofunctional Physiotherapy

Neurofunctional physiotherapy deals with diseases that affect the Central Nervous System (CNS) and/or the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) with a focus on the recovery of neurological, motor and cognitive issues.

Pediatric Physiotherapy

In pediatric physiotherapy, care is aimed at newborns, babies, children and adolescents for the treatment of congenital or acquired diseases after birth.

Neuromuscular Diseases

Regarding neuromuscular diseases, care involves working with components of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), responsible for conveying sensitivity and movement information through the spinal cord, nerves and muscles to the brain.

SMA

Regarding Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), care involves preventing the disease, respiratory failure and the early aggravation of SMA, working to improve residual muscle function, as well as offering better quality and prolonging life for these patients.

GET TO KNOW

Types of SMA

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare degenerative disease passed on from parents to children. Classified into 5 types (0, I, II, III and IV), SMA interferes with the body's ability to produce a protein essential for the survival of motor neurons that are responsible for vital voluntary gestures considered simple by the body, such as breathing, swallowing and moving.

Check below the types and how the symptoms of SMA manifest in each of them.

Type 0

Type 0 cases are considered to be cases in which symptoms already manifest in the prenatal phase. In this type, profound hypotonia and severe respiratory failure are present at birth.

Type 1

In type I, symptoms manifest between 0 and 6 months of the baby's life, who, in this type, cannot sit without support.

Type 2

In type II, symptoms appear between the 6th and 18th month of life of the child, who, in turn, can sit independently, but cannot walk independently.

Type 3

In type III, symptoms appear after the child is 18 months old. In this type, they walk independently, but loose stability as the disease progresses.

Type 4

In type IV, symptoms start at age 21, an adult who, in turn, walks and does not lose this ability, but may present muscle weakness.
